. Bowman-Terry-1951Irene (Bowman) Astleford was inducted into the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2011.
Irene has served as a community volunteer, educating students about the dangers of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. For her efforts, she received the Omaha Education Association’s School Bell Award, the Omaha Board of Education’s 4PC (Parent/Peer/Prevention/Power Club) Award, and Dr. Tom Osborne honored her at a spring football game. She initially worked with Columbian School 6th graders, eventually expanding the program to include fundraising projects, and then further expanding it to include all OPS 6th, 7th and 8th graders. They later included Boys Town and Murdock, Nebraska schools. She organized a Drug Rally at Rosenblatt Stadium including transportation, where attendees pledged to avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco. She has held leadership positions and devoted countless hours to the Assistance League of Omaha. She is a Deacon and holds leadership positions in her church and also serves on numerous boards of charitable and school organizations. She is member of the Questers which preserves antiques, artifacts, memorials, buildings and landmarks for educational purposes. Her brother, Terry Bowman-1951, also in the SHS Hall of Fame. |
