RAY YOST

Class of 1950
​Inducted in 2022
Ray was inducted posthumously into the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats in 2022.

High School Honors
  • 3 letters: basketball
  • 1949-50 Intercity League scoring champion (132 pts).
  • 1950 All-Intercity League Team “hook shot artist of the South team”.
  • 1949-50 OW-H All-State Basketball team
  • Every Nebraska Boys Basketball All-State Selection of All Time: OW-H, May 16, 2018
 
Post High School
  • Attended Creighton University: participated in ROTC, got degree in sociology
    • Lettered 3 years: freshman team scoring champ (216 points). Voted co-captain as a junior.
    • One of the first two players to score 1,000 points as Bluejays.
    • Yost left CU as the owner of the single-season scoring mark.
  • Ray had interest from the MN Lakers NBA team, but had already committed to joining the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant; he was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, left as a 1st. Lt in 1958. Ray boxed while he was in the service and won several division title bouts.
  • He kept active in sports: won Omaha Free-Throw Grand Championship in 1960 and played basketball for several different teams until 1968. He then took up bowling and had great success in multiple leagues.
  • He also enjoyed horseback riding, hunting and fishing.
  • He worked at Omaha National Bank and also owned Western Recreation Hall on S. 24th.
