Joe was inducted into the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats in 2008.
Joe Toledo participated in football, basketball and baseball, earning eight letters. He received Intercity Honorable Mention in football. He made the varsity baseball team as a sophomore and played for the next three years, pitching his last two years. He was often named Player of the Week by the Omaha World-Herald as an ace pitcher, and also won other awards. He played Legion ball for the Metz Brewery team winning the City Championship in 1954 and 1955, being named to the All Star Team after the State Championship game. He signed with the Brooklyn Dodger’s farm team and played for two years after which he played on various semi-pro teams in Omaha and surrounding area. Joe coached various youth sports teams in baseball in football, and was Sports Director for St. Bernadette Parish’s Athletic Club. Joe also umpired both baseball and softball, before coaching a new football league for South Omaha kids 8-12 years old. He worked as a tradesman for many years at Kellogg’s and is now retired. He is an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Lodge 3019. Joe and his friend, Joe Cabral, ran a golf tournament for music scholarships for 15 years, awarding $40,000 to students. Toledo was honored by the Nebraska & Western Iowa Old Timers’ Baseball Association. |
