John was inducted into the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats in 2003.

John Stella was a basketball and baseball player during his four years at SHS.  He played baseball at Omaha University for four years, and then played in the San Francisco Giants Minor League program. 

He was a volunteer baseball coach at SHS (1985-2001), and an American Legion coach for SHS players (1982-2003).  He was honored by the Nebraska Baseball Coaches Association as “Man of the Year” in 1992 and 1994.  He was the National High School Baseball Coaches Association District 5 “Assistant Coach of the Year” in 1996 and was honored by the Nebraska-Iowa Oldtimers Baseball Association for “Achievement and Dedication to Baseball.” 

​John received many other honors and is a member of the Minor League Baseball Alumni Association.
