John was inducted into the the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats for football, wrestling, and track & field in 2000.
As an All-American lineman, he was a three-year letterman at Omaha South and helped the Packers win the Metro Conference championship in 1977 and earned all-state honors in 1978. He was awarded Athlete of the Year in 1979 by Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star. On the wrestling mat, he garnered numerous AAU championships and captured the Class A heavyweight championship in 1978 and 1979. A 60-foot shot putter, he also earned the all-class gold medal at the state track meet as a junior and senior; posting a two-year record of 61-0. Played with the Nebraska Cornhuslers (1980-83); as a OL he was part of the Cornhusker's "Scoring Explosion" Team. He was inducted into the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame in 2013. |
