Lt. Col. Stanley O. Schaetzle was inducted into the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2011 and into the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats in 2001.
USAF (Retired), Sumter, South Carolina, was a career Air Force helicopter pilot. Among his many assignments, he commanded a Helicopter Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina and was the Operations Officer (Second in Command) of a Local Base Rescue Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam. His decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Commendation Medal as well as other military awards. He also served on the USAF Headquarters Staff in the Pentagon in Washington, DC and Commanded an NCO Academy at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC. He is or has been a member or officer of several military and veteran’s organizations as well as the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and various religious and community organizations. While completing college at the University of Nebraska - Omaha (UNO), he earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball. His single game scoring record of 46 points in basketball still stands. He received the UNO J. Gordon Roberts Outstanding Athlete Award in 1957, was inducted into the UNO Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. |
