"I did not realize the challenges that would be ahead. My classmates and I seemed to be inextricably tied to the mass labor force of the packing industry in the shadows of South High School. The association with the term "Packer" however, provided us with a source of pride in being part of the "World's Largest" industry. As I grew older, my pride in being a "Packer" swelled as I came to appreciate the diverse, hard-working and proud people who make up this community." This pride in self and community has not only been shown, but also rewarded for James Ramirez. In 1986, Dr. Ramirez was selected as Nebraska Hispanic Man of the Year, followed by the Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation of Service in 1988. These awards came from the many hours that were dedicated to the youth of the Omaha area. James Ramirez has served the community as a Unit Director of the Boys Club of Omaha, Counselor/Instructor for the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and currently serves as the Community and Human Relations Specialist for the Omaha Public Schools. "Pride and love of self was one of the most important elements I gained in life and I owe this to my parents who's formal education was limited, but their wisdom immense. From a loving, caring home they provided me with the tools to meet and accept the challenges of life." |
