Mel was inducted into the Packer Sports Greats in 2008.
Mel lettered in football two years, and wrestling three years. While playing with the 1957 Championship Team, he won All City and All State football honors. While a member of the State Championship Wrestling Team for three years, he won All City and was selected for KMTV’s All Regional Wrestling Team. Mel served in the Marine Corps and then attended Omaha University, earning four letters in wrestling. He also played football at OU and the 1962 team was CIC Conference and All Sports Bowl Champions. Mel was selected Second Team All Conference in 1962. He amassed impressive coaching career wrestling wins at Underwood Iowa, Benson High School, and Millard North High School. He has served as President of the Metro Coaches Association, on the Nebraska State Wrestling Coaches Association Board, on the National and State Rules Committee and was inducted in the Metro Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and the University of Nebraska at Omaha Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001. |
