Jerry was inducted into the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Packer Sports Greats in 2010.
While in high school, Jerry earned 10 letters while attending SHS. He participated in football, wrestling and baseball. He was chosen as captain of both 1951 football and wrestling teams, while winning the state 165lb. wrestling championship, and being selected to the KMTV All-City team. He was also selected Class President and Homecoming King. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln before transferring to the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and attended pilot training school. He was discharged as a Captain in the reserves because he was needed to run the family business when his father died. He served as past President of the Omaha Funeral Directors Association, South Omaha Merchants Association, South Omaha Optimist Club and also was Lt. Governor of the Nebraska District of Optimist Club. Jerry has been very supportive of youth activities in the Omaha area, coaching baseball and basketball CYO teams. He was a Cub and Boy Scout Chairman. He was a member of Sokol South Omaha and the South Omaha Youth Center as well as a committee member of "Swing for the Retarded." He has worked on United Way campaigns, and was the District Representative of the International Order of the Golden Rule (an independent organization of Funeral Homes and Directors). His honors including receiving the Omaha Archbishop's Youth Service Award and being named South Omaha Businessman of the Month. Jerry and his family have operated a funeral service for the Omaha area for more than 50 years. He is a semi-retired funeral director for Korisko, Larkin & Staskiewicz Mortuary in South Omaha. |
