Tom was honored with and given our Distinguished Teacher Award at the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2016.
Tom was a SHS special education teacher at SHS from 1986 to 2011. He was an Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher award winner in 1998. Such an honor is given only to teachers who instill in students a desire to learn and achieve; who understand their individual needs and encourage their talents; who demonstrate a thorough knowledge of their individual subject matter and possess the ability to share it effectively with them. Nominating comments from colleagues included all that and more. He received his 1977 BS and 1983 MS degrees from UNO. After retirement, Tom serves as St. Stanislaus choir director and helps with its parish festival. He also serves on the board of directors and as activities manager for the Polish Home. He continues involvement with special education students by coaching the Special Olympics Omaha Bears team. He has received awards from the Food Bank, OPS and was inducted into the Special Olympics Hall of Fame. Tom retired in 2011 after 34 years teaching special education for OPS, which included 24 years at SHS. Tom said he considers himself a Packer! |
