Greg was inducted into the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2019.
Greg graduated from South High in 1989. He participated in baseball and football while at South and was also an Honor Roll student. Upon graduation, Greg attended UNO. He played baseball for the Mav’s for two years. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1996, He received his Master’s in Public Administration from Bellevue University in 2008, and also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2012. Greg became a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy, where he served from 1993-1995. He then was hired by Omaha Police in 1995, working in the Gang, Narcotics, Homicide, and Traffic Units, Criminal Investigations and Uniform Patrol. Greg was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2002, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2005, promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009 and became a Deputy Chief in 2012. In 2019 he was the Deputy Chief in charge of the Executive Services Bureau, responsible for supervising the training and community policing section, along with background investigations, inspections unit, the Police Athletic League, neighborhood services unit and the research and planning unit (CALEA). In 2021 he announced his plans to run for Douglas County Sheriff. Greg has and is still serving with many area organizations to include - The National Latino Peace Officers Association where he was the NE Chapter President from 2009-2012. Project Extra Mile, Greg has been on the Board of Directors Underage Drinking Initiative a 501c3 organization since 2011; Victory Youth Boxing Club Board of Directors from 2008-2010; Midwest Mentoring Partnership Board of Directors from 2015-present; PACE Board Chairperson from 2015 to the present; Niles Paul Foundation Board of Directors 2017 to present . Greg has been honored with many awards and commended for his work by receiving the following acknowledgments: High Intensity Drug Trafficking Case of the year, 2004 Crimestoppers Officer of the year runner-up in 2008 Project Extrea Mile Law Enforcement Officer Award of Excellence 2010 Omaha Coalition of Citizen’s Patrols Officer of the Year 2012 Omaha’s Latino of the Year Award 2012 Omaha Community Service “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” Award – 2015 UNO’s Distinguished Alumni Award – 2017 Martin Luther King “Living the Dream Award” 2018 Greg is a well-respected individual and leader who cares about and volunteers for his community, particularly the South Omaha community. His mother is also a South High graduate, as are several siblings. Together with his wife, Kathy, they proudly serve their community and are shining star representatives of Packer Pride. |
