Msg. John A. Flynn was inducted into the SHSAA Hall of Fame in 1998.

Msg. John A. Flynn was inducted into the SHS Hall of Fame in 1998.  He attended St. Bridget’s Grade School, SHS, and the College of Commerce at Creighton University, all in Omaha.  He also attended St. Lawrence College Minor Seminary at Mt. Calvary, WI, and Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, MO.  He received his BA in Philosophy at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MN, his MS in Education from Creighton University and was on the graduate school staff at Creighton University for two summers.

He was ordained a Catholic priest in Omaha in 1954 and was named Associate Pastor at St. Patrick’s Church in Fremont, NE and St. Joan of Arc Church in Omaha.  He served as Pastor of St. Michael’s Church in Coleridge, NE.

He specialized in education and was the administrator of Bergan High School in Fremont, NE, Superintendent of Cedar Catholic High School in Hartington, NE, Director of Education and later Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Omaha, thus serving approximately 25,000 students and 3,000 teachers.

He attended and led many educational workshops and seminars, wrote articles for Today’s Catholic Teacher publication, and was a member and leader of many professional associations.  He received the Outstanding Education Award from Today’s Catholic Teacher publication in 1986 and the NCEA First National Development Award in 1987.

He served on editorial boards, television advisory boards, broadcasting associations and the Archbishop’s Committee for Educational Development.  His articles appeared in many education publications.

He was a pioneer in educational development, initiating the Omaha program in 1971.  This generated over $40 million for elementary and secondary schools in the Omaha Archdiocese.
