Mario was inducted as a coach into the SHSAA Packer Sports Greats Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025.
Mario was a long-time coach at South High School. From 1985-1993 he coached the Freshman football team and the girl's Freshman basketball team and from 1990-1998 he coached the boys Varsity baseball team. Starting in 1993, he coached softball teams for 16 years. For the three years before he retired in 2008, he coached both the boys and girls Varsity tennis teams. Mario started with South as a Community Liaison Representative, and after 2 years joined the staff in 1985. For 23 years he taught various levels of Spanish, from level 1 to Spanish for Spanish Speakers; was the Spanish club sponsor and was on the Student of the Month selection committee. As a volunteer, Mario coached “Omaha’s Finest” softball feeder program from 2008 to 2020, and for the past 12 years, he has run the concessions at HP Smith field and Steve Cavlovic field to help raise funds for the SHS softball program. |
