SAM ALBINO SR.

Class of 1949
Inducted in 2026
Sam was inducted into SHSAA Hall of Fame in 2026.

After graduating from South in 1949, Sam served in the US Army during the Korean War. After his tour, he met and married Janus von Forell.  They had seven children.  Six of them are South High graduates.

Sam worked for the City of Omaha for 16 years.  During that time, he was involved with the civilian employees union and helped them negotiate their contract with the city. He volunteered his time working on various union activities including Septemberfest.  He was active in the Omaha Central Labor Union, State AFL-CIO and political campaigns of numerous city, county and state politicians.

Sam served as the Douglas County Democrat Party Treasurer for two years.  He handled funding, organizing campaign events, and soliciting funds for Senator Exon’s re-election campaign by scheduling campaign visits to area businesses in Omaha.  He was also active in Ben Nelson’s campaigns.

He spent 40 years as a member of the Knights of Columbus, being a Grand Knight of a council.  He was a fourth degree and a district deputy.  Sam loved working with the mentally handicapped, working on the Tootsie Roll Drive and other fundraising events for the Knights.  He would find volunteers to work and sometimes he would pull extra shifts when someone couldn’t make it. He loved volunteering his time to worthy causes and see the satisfaction of a job well done.

He re-opened the council at St. Stephen’s the Martyr in Omaha for the KOC.

Sam passed in 2008 at the age of 77.
